It requires a little more work and patience from your reader, but once you figure out the game, it can heighten the pleasure inherent in reading, the tension and relief of revelation. And while unintentional disorientation is the sign of bad writing, intentional disorientation can be fun. Others dole them out slowly, reeling the reader in little by little. A lot of books can’t wait to reveal all of their secrets. ![]()

5/23/2023 0 Comments The inheritance cycle![]() ![]() But the author has pretensions to, well, pretentiousness. Had he ripped off Star Wars more closely, Eragon might have been a gripping narrative, if nothing else. ![]() Actually, that may be giving Paolini too much credit. ![]() But, as many other reviewers have said, Eragon is a shameless copy of Star Wars: A New Hope cloaked in generic high fantasy tropes. This is a relatively minor issue in the book, though, and were the content worth reading, it wouldn't be enough to stop me from recommending the book. They're the most beautiful, magical, and good creatures in Paolini's derivative world, and anyone who disagrees with them is either stupid, evil, or both. You see, the elves in this book are atheists, which would be fine in and of itself, but they're also an entire race of Mary-Sues. The most surprising thing about this otherwise flat, overlong retread of ground blazed by Tolkien and Campbell is its atheist agenda. ![]() ![]() ![]() lol! Like I said in my review of the GUILTY PLEASURES VOLUME 1, I was so stoked to find out LKH had graphic novels. I can't remember. ![]() Plus, of course, actually see these characters in stead. Rather, it was fun to actually see these things in stead. I enjoyed not having to hear so many detailed descriptions of Anita's guns and toy penguins and her being short and Jean Claude's satin shirts. Fortunately I've read the actual books so I pretty much knew what was going on. Well, I read this one first and it it not book 1. So when I saw these at my local library, I had to give a couple a try, not really being able to tell which books were which number (I was in a hurry). Situations such as these have occurred throughout history they are merely the most extreme and most tragic of numerous kinds of conflicts that beset mankind. The warring participants, meanwhile, have done irreparable damage to their common heritage and to their shared government and territory through excessive claims and counterclaims designed to make their opponents' position appear both untenable and ludicrous. The resulting human casualties as well as the physical destruction serve to exacerbate the situation to such a degree that reconciliation becomes virtually impossible. During the conflict itself the stresses and strains brought on by confrontations ranging from name-calling to pitched battles move people to the brink of mutual destruction. Perhaps no human experience is more searing or more likely to have a long-range adverse effect on the participants than violent conflict among peoples of the same national, racial, or ethnic group. 1-14 Mirror for Americans: A Century of Reconstruction History Published in the American Historical Review 85, no. ![]() ![]() ![]() This presidential address was delivered at the 94th annual meeting of the American Historical Association in New York, December 28, 1979. ![]() 5/22/2023 0 Comments Smashed by junji ito![]() ![]() Other stories were fantastically horrifying. ![]() They had no bite, they had no fear or interesting build-up. Some of these stories were extremely lame to me. The first thing I have to state, emphatically, is that there is a beautiful display of different cultural ideals here. ![]() I bought Smashed on Halloween and began reading. Most of what I found was American made, which didn’t interest me at all, until a certain publisher approached me, but I’ll save that for next week… I wanted samurai, but I also wanted it to be frightening, I wanted horror and weird fiction to creep into my gritty samurai shit. I wanted more samurai stuff, I wanted Kurosawa. I picked it up because I had just finished the PS4 game Ghost of Tsushima. Junji Ito’s Smashed straddles the line between the two things fantastically. So understand that there are aspects of Japanese media and culture that I love and fanboy out over, and aspects that I just straight up cannot stand. I’ve had an easier time finding horror and cool things I like in Manga form, though a lot of what I have enjoyed actually came out of Korea. But at the same time, I mostly strongly dislike anime and most jrpgs. I love Kurosawa, Toho is my lifeblood, I enjoy samurai and ninja in books, comics and movies. Here’s a full disclaimer, I am both a fan of and a critic of Japanese media. ![]() 5/22/2023 0 Comments Calvin hobbes comics![]() "Would you mind leaving me alone with Hobbes for a while?
